FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

You’ve come to the right place. At Mattos Monuments, we are committed to assisting you throughout the process. We will help you understand the regulations and restrictions of the cemetery where the stone will be installed and will provide you with a large selection of sizes, shapes, and granite colors to fit your taste, style, and budget. Call, email, or visit our showroom. We will greet you with friendly, no-pressure service and happily answer any questions. We aim to provide you with the highest-quality product for your needs and budget.
We begin by helping you select the size, shape, and granite color. We work closely with all the Bay Area cemeteries and make sure you are selecting a memorial that meets their guidelines. Once you choose, we will write up an order that includes the information you would like on the stone, help you select a design, have you sign your cemetery permit, and collect a down payment. Our in-house, experienced artists will design your memorial as you requested, and we will email you a proof for your review and approval through our Stonespot portal. If there’s something you would like to have changed or an error or misspelling, it’s no problem. Just let us know, and we will gladly make the necessary changes until you are completely satisfied. It is extremely important to triple check all the grammar, spelling, and accuracy of dates on the proof.

Absolutely! Many customers purchase over the phone or via email without ever setting foot in our design room. You can view our Design Book on our website, in addition to many pictures of completed work in our Inspiration section. We respond very quickly to your quote request and help guide you through this overwhelming process.

Yes, we can. We have portable equipment and can add death dates on-site at most cemeteries. Occasionally, cemeteries require the stone to be removed so that the second grave can be excavated. In cases like these, we are able to remove the stone from the cemetery, engrave the death date at our shop, and re-install it after the cemetery has backfilled and compacted the grave.

We typically request a 50% deposit of the total cost of the order to begin or order the granite and to start with the design and proof approval process. We accept cash, personal and cashier’s checks, VISA, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, and debit cards. We can even email or text you a secure payment link to make the process fast and easy.

We have many standard shapes and sizes of in-stock granite to choose from. There are two main types of headstones to choose from: grass markers and upright monuments. Grass markers are typically installed flat, flush with the grass (required by some cemeteries), or poured on a slight slope. Upright monuments come in several different shapes, from standard vertical monuments to wedge-shaped slants, hearts, ovals, teardrops, and others. Please take a look at our inspiration pages for examples of completed work.
