Why some designs cant be sandblasted on granite
A design that looks beautiful on a computer screen may not be possible sandblasted on granite.
Today, families have more ways than ever to explore ideas for a memorial. AI programs such as ChatGPT can even create beautiful drawings and concepts from a simple description. These images can be wonderful inspiration, but are limited in their replication as an image sandblasted on granite.
Sandblasting Is Different From Printing
When an image is printed on paper, a printer can reproduce extremely fine lines, tiny details, shading, and delicate patterns. Sandblasting granite is a very different process.
To create a sandblasted design, we prepare artwork that can be cut into a special stencil. The stencil is applied to the granite, and the exposed areas are carefully blasted with abrasive material to carve the design into the stone.
Because we are physically carving granite, lines and spaces in the artwork must be large enough to survive the stencil-cutting and sandblasting process.
If a line is too thin, a space is too small, or two details are too close together, they may disappear, break apart, or blend together and cannot be sandblasted on granite properly.
Why AI-Generated Artwork Can Be a Challenge
AI-generated drawings often contain beautiful details that look great on a screen:
- extremely thin lines
- tiny facial or decorative details
- delicate shading
- closely spaced lines
- intricate textures
- very small lettering or patterns
Those details may work perfectly in a digital image, but they were not necessarily created to be sandblasted on granite.
That doesn’t mean you can’t use an AI-generated image as inspiration.
An AI image can be a great way to show us the style, subject, or feeling you would like for your loved one’s memorial. Our job is then to determine how that idea can be translated into artwork that will work properly on granite.
We May Need to Simplify or Redraw Your Design to be Sandblasted on Granite
When necessary, our artists may need to:
- make thin lines heavier
- increase the space between details
- simplify complicated areas
- remove details that are too small
- adjust lettering
- redraw portions of the image
These changes aren’t made because we don’t like the original design. They are made so the finished artwork can be successfully sandblasted and look beautiful in stone, not just on a screen.
